laboratory意为“实验室”，可简写为lab.
spend sometime doing sth. 花时间做某事
这句话里的usual在单选题第21题也考查了，意为“通常的”。instead of the usual five，是和前面的seven years相对应，即他在学校待了7年而不是通常的5年。
